The Capital Area Watchmaker & Clockmaker Guild (CAWCG) of Texas is a non-profit volunteer association of professional and amateur watchmakers and clockmakers. We are affiliated with the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI), the premier organization for professional horologists, However, the CAWCG has long welcomed amateurs, serious hobbyists, and who wish to further their knowledge in this field. The Guild was founded about 60 years ago largely through the efforts of Cecil Mulholland. Mr. Mulholland was also instrumental in the founding of the Texas Watchmakers Association (TWA), a state wide organization that served the numerous guilds once active in Texas for many years. The Austin Guild is currently the only active guild in Texas.
We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month for a business meeting to discuss and vote on Guild business, and for an educational presentation. Meetings also provide an opportunity to visit with others in this field to share information with the group, and to solve individual problems involving repair and identification of clocks and watches. Guild activities include the monthly meetings, an annual auction, classes, an annual Christmas party, and other events as suggested and scheduled. Guild membership is open to all interested individuals. Membership in AWCI is encouraged, but not required for guild membership.
Classes are offered throughout each year that are watch or clock related and are designed for skill levels ranging from the beginner to the advanced student. Prerequisites may apply for some classes.
We conduct at least one auction annually to provide an opportunity for members to buy and sell horologically related items. The Guild retains 10% of sales as a fund raising activity to provide for Guild activities.
If you would like more information on the CAWCG or on membership, please attend a monthly meeting or send email the CAWCG secretary. Meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month except for December. The Guild meets at Pok-e-Jo's Smokehouse 2121 W Parmer Lane, Austin (at Lamplight Village Ave, between Mopac and Metric). The meeting begins officially at 6:00 pm, but members often arrive early to socialize and eat before the meeting starts. Please note: Pok-e-Jo's provides a meeting room for our organization—all attending are expected to purchase a meal (it’s very good food) or drink, or pay a $3 charge.
